Balancing the Equation
On Monday 5 October, Mrs Niblett and Dr Wald took 13 Year 11 girls to the Oxford Institute of Mathematics to take part in a fascinating Balancing the Equation Day.
The day included lots of Maths problem solving - based on Group theory which is university level mathematics. There were some excellent talks given by women working with Mathematics in different fields, a PhD student working in biology looking at modelling cancer and a maths communicator and artist. There was a panel of student mentors from the university who supported each group and shared about their use of mathematics (Balancing the Equation - AMSP).
Students enthused about the day, saying they "liked learning about all the different ways to use maths in the real world"; they "loved hearing from people who apply maths in different ways and also enjoyed solving problems and working out how to apply theories in different ways" and further commented "Knowing that maths isn't limited to being applied to STEM-based subjects was really eye-opening it was so interesting to know many different applications and job opportunities... Learning how maths can be applied to subjects such as art and biology was very interesting, and it was fun to learn how different people interpret and use maths differently."
