Year 7 September 2025 Entry

The test provider for the entrance test for entry into Year 7 in September 2025 will be GL Assessment. For familiarisation material, please see their website – GL Familiarisation Material.

Since 11+ tests vary from one area to another, it’s important to note that the free familiarisation materials are generic and may differ from your own test’s exact specifications.  These differences may include the length of papers, the types of questions covered, and/or the level of difficulty.

In-Year Admissions

Please note that the normal entry points to the school are in Years 7 and Year 12 (Sixth Form). We therefore rarely have places available in other year groups.

There are currently no places available in Years 7 – 11. Please note that this does not include the main entry into Year 7 in September of each academic year.

In-Year applications for places in these years will be tested if and when a place becomes available. Applicants are placed on our Register of Interest. If an In-Year vacancy does occur because of a student leaving the school, all applicants on the Register of Interest will be invited to sit tests set by the school. These tests will not replicate the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools’ Entrance Test (which children take for a place in Year 7) but will seek to establish whether the applicant will fit both within the ability levels of the current year group and the curriculum offered at the school.

If you would to find out any further information please contacting the Admissions Officer, Ms S Graves by emailing or by telephoning the school on 01242 523169.

If you would like your child to be placed on our Register of Interest, please complete the form below and send it to:

Parents whose child has applied to be admitted to the School but has not been offered a place, either in Year 7 or any other year group, are entitled to appeal against that decision to an Independent Appeals Panel.

Year 7 Appeals (as part of the main admissions process)

Parents wishing to appeal must register for their appeal, ahead of the deadline, by submitting an Appeals Registration Form from this page of the website.

If the child does not have a test rank, parents will also need to register for an Appeals Test at the same time as registering an appeal – this should be indicated on the Appeals Registration Form. The School will make arrangements for an Appeals Test in April, and will thereafter convene an independent panel to hear all appeals together as quickly as possible.

If your child has not been successful in gaining a place at Pate’s Grammar School for entry in Year 7 in September 2024, you do have a statutory right to appeal before an Independent Admissions Appeal panel. Additionally, if you believe extenuating circumstances may have affected your child’s performance on the day of the test, this may be grounds for your appeal. Reasons might be medical, or a recent family bereavement, for example. However, having a sibling at the school, transport issues, or extra-curricular achievements are not considered sufficient grounds for appeal. Please contact after 1st March 2024 to request an Appeal Information pack.

Wednesday 24th April 2024 (3pm) – Deadline for submitting the Appeal Registration Form back to Pate’s Grammar School

Friday 26th April 2024 (3pm) – Deadline for submitting any additional evidence for your appeal

Appeal Hearings will take place in May, with exact dates to be confirmed nearer the time.

In-Year Applications

Parents should contact the School’s Admissions Manager ( if they would like their child to be considered for admission. Appeals for entry into Years 8-11 will be arranged as necessary.

To lodge an appeal for your child, please download the Appeal Registration Form from this page of our website. Completed forms should be emailed to, or posted to Pate’s Grammar School, Princess Elizabeth Way, Cheltenham, GL51 0HG.
