Maths and Computing Faculty

Mathematics is a beautiful subject. It provides students with the skills to solve problems and appreciate the patterns that occur in everyday life. The maths department at Pate’s Grammar school strives to develop students that have the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. In maths at Pate's we empower our students by looking beyond the curriculum. We value problem solving and ensure that it permeates the work undertaken by all year groups. We likewise encourage risk taking when solving problems, challenging all to become confident in their own ability in mathematics. We believe our teaching is innovative, allowing students to thrive. We provide a safe and secure environment in which to learn and offer weekly support sessions for all year groups.

The maths department is very proud of the achievements of our students year on year, not only their attainment in maths (which is exceptional by any measure), but also their willingness to help others; we have fostered links with junior schools in the area enabling us to support some of the most able mathematicians within our local community. We also take the opportunity to provide our students with the challenge of external maths events, each year entering all of our year 7&8 students for the Junior UKMT maths challenge and many pupils in years 9 to 13 for the Intermediate and Senior events - with many pupils going on to compete in subsequent rounds at national level. Each year we also work with the Further Maths Support Programme (FMSP) to host the Year 10 maths feast, a yearly competition against local schools. Maths is an incredibly popular subject choice in years 12 and 13 at Pate's, with over 200 students taking A-Level mathematics and over 100 taking A-level further mathematics. Our further mathematicians in particular benefit from our links with GCHQ - weekly sessions from the mathematicians at GCHQ look beyond the A level syllabus and give those wishing to read mathematics at university an insight into topic areas they may meet. Working alongside FMSP we also provide STEP (sixth term extension paper) sessions, not only to our own students but to those in the local area, helping students to prepare for the rigorous exam that Cambridge, Warwick and other top universities require when applying for maths at University. Maths at Pate's is a popular and exciting subject, our students thrive in a culture of discovery and exploration, nurturing many to go on and study the subject (or a related field) at world class universities.

"Maths at my primary school was just about doing sums - now I understand it is about learning how to use a whole new language to solve problems, I love it!" (Year 8 Pupil)
